In fall 2022 our dear ARTSCENICO Board member Margriet Procee (ACM, NL) and Fanny Kieft founded the “Costume United” app group to improve working conditions, increase day rates, and promote collaboration and sustainable design in the costume industry.
The project aims to improve resource utilization and community building in the film and TV industry through sustainable initiatives and enhanced collaboration.
Over a year and a half, the group has grown to 153 members, with subgroups like “Costume Wanted” and “Job Wanted.” These foster costume sharing, better day rate guidelines, and stronger community connections.
The Challenge: Ecological Impact
A Dutch think tank with various stakeholders meets monthly to discuss reducing the costume department’s ecological footprint. A survey showed nearly 75% support for sustainable ideas. With GreenScreen’s guidance and a subsidy from the City of Amsterdam, the initiative is moving forward.
The benefits of Online Costume Houses include resource sharing, immediate access to actor sizes, and visual planning aids. Participants need to photograph and list their costumes. This setup enhances resource utilization, digital transformation, and sustainability.
A proposed 6000 m² facility (Physical Costume House) in central Netherlands would offer essential services and workspaces, improving efficiency, shared storage, and sustainability. A business plan would secure funding through subsidies, loans, or investments. The inventory would include historical costumes, contemporary clothing, and uniforms. Further research is needed for membership models and partnerships.
