Finnish initiative & publication on sustainable sets with crew and budget in mind
Under the title “Ekosetti in Euros – A Peek into the Economics of Production Sustainability” authors Kaisa Astikainen and Anne Puolanne published their independent follow-up to Finland’s first AV industry environmental guidebook, “Ekosetti – A Guidebook to Sustainable Production in Finland” (2019).
The publication “explores the relationship between the economy and ecology in Finnish audiovisual productions. It compiles concrete examples illustrating the environmental and economic impact of choices that productions make daily.”
Even as sustainability is discussed widely in Finland and most of the country’s efforts are ahead of most other European countries, most Finnish film industry participants lack knowledge of environmental sustainability costs or its impact on production budgets, as other national film industries do. The authors try to counter that with a view at the range of options, which could benefit productions. They even created a calculator (which you can download for free under: ekosetti.fi) to compare figures, costs and emissions.
Check the PDF, to see their comparisons of different types of traveling (by airplane or car) and the emissions by fuel type one uses for traveling or moving crew members. In the energy parts of the publication you’ll find the topic of Digitalization, which is often overseen or dismissed, although AI and other digital services and workprocesses produce lots of emissions, too.
