TSF Studio Plan

TSF Studio Plan for Parisian Backlot

The French CNC (Centre national du Cinéma et de l’image animée)reports on the new Parisian Streets Backlot of the TSF. Members of our members ADC, afcca, and MAD worked together with TSF to define some parts of the backlot.

TSF, a full-offer rental company that rents film and digital cameras (incl. various types of lenses), lighting projectors, dollies, cranes, and remote heads, as well as drones, cable systems and trucks, operates on 6 different sites in France and Belgium.

In 2024 they also started to build a studio complex around 50km outside of Paris, that soon will contain up to 12 sound stages besides existing workshops and storage, an airfield for airplanes and stunt action, a water pond for scenes on ships etc., an airbus 300 cabin and cockpit. The whole area should be finished in 2026.

The most interesting part of that new project is a 1.5-hectare Parisian Backlot area, that has 650 meters of roadway, 172 meters of boulevard, and 730 meters of facades with 12 meters of height. The facades vary in design: The Luxury parts recreate Parisian upscale neighborhoods (to be found in the 7th, 8th, or 16th arrondissement); midrange facades represent the 9th or 10th arrondissement and project a more intimate neighborhood; then there are simple facades and workshops to show life in the outskirts and suburbs.

The facades are kept neutral to be best modulated for specific needs. There are elevation changes (metro stairs and esplanade) and the existing structure can be used to create new exteriors or interior courtyards. Balconies on the facades are fully functional, and apartments and shops can be built inside, to use the streets behind the windows for creating a Parisian atmosphere. Overall, the Parisian Streets backlot allows the creation of custom sets in sustainable and environmentally responsible infrastructure.
